It costs $2 per day to place a one-line ad in the classifieds plus a flat service fee. One day costs $3 and four days cost $9. Use this information to answer the questions below.
1.Write a linear equation that gives the cost in dollars, y, in terms of the number of days the ad appears, x.
2.Find the cost of a six day ad.
You are driving from Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Detroit , Michigan. You leave Grand Rapids at 4pm. At 5:10 pm, you pass through Lansing, Michigan, a distance of 65 miles. Use this information to answer the questions below.
1. Write a linear equation that ives the distance in miles, d, in terms of time, t. Let t represent the number of minutes since 4pm.
2. Approximately what time will you arrive in Detroit if it is 150 miles from Grand Rapids?
1) Linear equations are of the form y = mx + c
where m and c are constants.
Given two points it is possible to solve by substituting in the values.
In this case however it is simpler because x is given as 2
Substituting in the values 1 and $3 gives us 3=2+y therefore y=1
The equation is
y=2x+1
2) Using the equation we have y=6 * 2 +1
Answer y = $13
1) The traveling equation is even simpler since c is zero and the equation is
d = 65t/70
To get the time in minutes we could write
m = 240+ 70d/65
where m= number of minutes past noon.
For Detroit the equation becomes
m = 240 +150 * 65/70 = 401.5384615 minutes
= 6.69 hours = 6:41 pm
