Church History

W   How you began

Meet the Church of the Nazarene...

The Church of the Nazarene is a Protestant Christian church in the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition, tracing its roots to an anniversary date of 1908. It was founded to spread the message of scriptural holiness (Christlike living) across the lands. Today the Church of the Nazarene is located in 151 world areas.

The Church of the Nazarene is a Great Commission church. We believe that God offers to everyone forgiveness, peace, joy, purpose, love, meaning in life, and the promise of heaven when life is over by entering and experiencing a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. We are called to take this message to people everywhere.

The Church of the Nazarene is also a holiness church. We believe that Christians can experience a deeper level of life in which there is victory over sin, power to witness and serve, and a richer fellowship with God, all through the infilling of the Holy Spirit.

We would like to introduce you to

our Savior - Jesus Christ . . .

Who He Is . . .

Because of our fallen nature, God poured the essence of His being and divinity into a human form which we identified as Jesus Christ. Each Christmas we celebrate the birth of God through a virgin named Mary. (Read John 1:1 and Philippians 2:6-8 in the Bible.)
Being made in human likeness, Jesus walked the Earth around 33 years. He was at that time both fully God and fully man. (For a more complete history on Jesus while on Earth, read the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John out of the Bible.)
He was the expected Savior or Messiah as told almost 700 years before his birth (read Isaiah 53 in the Bible). But most felt he was coming as a political king to conquer the powerful Roman Empire. They couldn't believe that their God would come as a humbled child in a manger. What they didn't realize was that he was the King of Kings.

What He Did . . .

While Jesus was on Earth, he healed the sick, fed the hungry, and even raised the dead. But God's ultimate purpose was to become the sin sacrifice for all times. "You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly . . . . But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him" (Romans 5:6; 8-9, NIV)!
Some of the religious leaders at the time believed Christ was not God and his claim to be so angered them. They were able under Roman law to get him crucified. Crucifixion was a cruel death. A person was nailed to a cross through the wrists and ankles. But that didn't cause the death. They slowly suffocated. Christ died on the cross as was foretold by the prophets hundreds of years before. It was all planned; because without the shedding of blood the would be no forgiveness of sins. (Read Matthew 26:47-27:66, Mark 14:43-15:47 , Luke 22:47-23:56, John 18:1-19:42, and Hebrews 9:22 in the Bible.)
His death, the religious leaders thought, would prove him not to be God. This would have been true if he had stayed dead. But as Christ said he would live again in three days. Now he lives as the risen Savior and sits at the right hand of his Father in Heaven. (Read Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, and John 20 and 21 in the Bible.)

So what does all this mean to you and me? It means we do not have to go through this world without hope, lonely, afraid, or brokenhearted. It means we don't have to worry about our eternal home. It means we have a God who loves us for who we are not what we do and will forgive us and give us a clean slate. It means we have a SAVIOR!

Think about this for a moment. The very God who created us also died for our sins. He didn't have to. His love for His creation beckoned Him to be our sin sacrifice. Jesus bridges the gap between Man and God which our personal sins cause.

An Illustrated View of What Jesus Christ Did for Us

Do you sense your need for a savior? Are you willing to give Jesus Christ a chance to change your life and outlook, to carry you through the tough and not-so-tough times, and to give you a home in Heaven? You cannot do it on your own. He's the only one who can do this. If "yes" is your answer, then follow the steps below.

How Jesus Can Be Your Savior . . .

Lastly, contact a local church to help you get grounded in the faith.  Congratulations on your new life, Christian!
First, you need to acknowledge that because of the sins you've committed you need Jesus as your Savior. Eternal life is a free gift but you need to accept it.
Second, believe that Jesus can and will forgive you and be your Savior.
Third, confess your sins and thank Him for giving you a brand new life.
